News and Announcements / Change of Network Ownership/Retirement
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:09:24 PM »
I have served as a staffer, manager and network owner (in order, heh) at TFL/TAFL since April 2003. Were I to continue here until next April, that'd be five years! After over a year's difficult decision-making and preparation, I have decided to leave TAFL at the New Year.

I will officially retire as network owner on December 31, 2007.

Rosemary will replace me as network owner as of January 1, 2008.

I have chosen Rosemary as my replacement because she and I are very like-minded, and I know she has the energy and time to devote to TAFL that I currently lack. She has been with us since the inception of the network and I have every confidence in her ability to lead TAFL for many years to come.

I realize that for many of you, my leaving will come as a shock; I assure you, it's just as strange to write this as I imagine it will be to read. I know that, again, for many of you, I've come to represent TAFL in a way that will be hard to change or replace. All I can say in reassurance is that I will NOT be leaving the forums -- I plan to putter around happily in the Alumni forum and the public forums (although I admit I will be taking leave of the site for the first several weeks of 2008. There's an adjustment period for me too. ^^;; )

I wanted to announce this with plenty of time for people to read; the last thing I want is to give everyone a nasty, last-minute shock come Christmas. I'm also leaving this post open for comments and goodbyes, so you have plenty of time for those too. :x

TAFL has been an enormous blessing to me over the past 4+ years, and my life has been enriched by interacting with all of you. You represent my greatest group of online friends. I will miss this place and everyone in it, but I know it's time to go.

I love you all. :) Thanks for reading. :)

2008 will be a year of many changes here at TAFL (said changes will be announced very shortly), and as such, we are promoting not one but TWO Senior Staffers today. Everyone please welcome Buruma and Shalott to the Senior Staff! :) :)

News and Announcements / Some Network Reminders
« on: November 10, 2007, 02:23:00 PM »
We would like to clarify and remind our members of a few things.

For the most part, TAFL network rules and regulations are not open for discussion. We always welcome comments and suggestions, which we read through and consider, and discuss as a group. We, however, are under no obligation to apply those comments and suggestions to the network or how it is run. If you have a comment or suggestion about anything that transpires at TAFL, please feel free to use the TAFL Contact Form to speak to the Senior Staffer of your choice, the Network Owner, or all of us, if you wish. You are NOT free to harass any Senior Staffer through their personal contact info, be that email, websites, LJ or IM handles.

Any Senior Staff member can and will answer any question(s) they see and are able to answer. These answers should be taken as definitive statements. They are under no obligation to explain in detail any answers they feel should be clear or have been discussed numerous times in the past. They are under no obligation to disclose how these answers came to be, with whom they were discussed or endorsed, or any other aspect of the decision-making process. They may also close any threads they answer if they feel the topic is now closed.

Please keep in mind that all members of the Senior Staff share the same beliefs and ideas about the network (we are all eerily like-minded). As such, when any Senior Staff member speaks, you can assume that they speak for the entire Senior Staff, and that any other member will give a similar (if not exactly same) answer. Each Senior Staffer has specific jobs which help the network run smoothly (TC management, board moderation, backups, etc), but they are not limited by these positions in the advice and answers they may give, in response to any post or question.

As a final, personal note, please remember that all TAFL Category Staffers, Senior Staffers, Trouble Checkers and board members are HUMAN BEINGS. Try to remember this before saying something that you might not (or definitely would not) say to someone's face. I like to believe that the TAFL boards, members and fanlistings represent a kinder, gentler community than most, and it deeply disturbs me to see people lashing out at others, as if this were a MuckY Social network-y-tyPe plACE. ^^;;;

News and Announcements / Changes to the Senior Staff
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:51:37 PM »
We've had some changes in the past week: Jenna is leaving us, sadly, as she is overcome by work duties. We appreciate her time here, and wish her the best! Mura has also elected to step down, as she would rather concentrate on assisting Jonathan in completing the new TAFL backend, as well as her current category duties. We salute her, and throw PHP-shaped confetti in her wake! ^^;

Kris will be joining us on the Senior Staff very shortly, taking Jenna's trouble-checker duties, and we're very excited to have her! Kris has been with TAFL since the inception of the network, and we feel she is an ideal fit.

Please make her feel welcome, and thanks for your attention! ^^

News and Announcements / Exciting New Affiliation with Collectica.com!
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:40:28 PM »
TAFL is excited to announce their affiliation with Collectica, a community site for collectors of all kinds (including anime/manga!) Think Flickr, with some Craigslist thrown in: create albums for your collections, upload pictures for free, and list things for sale via their classified system! They are working to build their community, and would like to in turn support TAFL, by giving us an incentive for each member we send their way. (This will go a long way toward our eventual goal of getting a dedicated server for the site! No more email worries!!)

From Collectica's About page:
Quote
Collectica is a platform for collectors. We exist to help collectors unite under the roofs of their own homes. Our in depth news and event coverage offers collectors a fresh perspective on the happenings of the industry. Our forums and wiki offer a way for collectors to contribute and help each other build their collections and knowledge. Contests and prizes seem to find their way to a lot of people too.

I tried the Collectica service yesterday and found it to be extremely cool. I'm looking forward to transferring my entire shitajiki collection to Collectica, and I firmly believe that the people behind Collectica want to give back to the communities that help build their own. It's a rare thing to have a site approach our network and ask first how they can help us, and this is an attitude we want to encourage!

Please visit Collectica and give their services a try! (Let's overrun them with anime collectors! *o* )

News and Announcements / Senior Staff Resignation
« on: November 28, 2006, 03:35:45 PM »
Jackie has accepted a great new job, to start next week. The unfortunate side effect of this is that, due to her job's requirements, she is resigning from her Senior Staff position. Jackie has been one of the Senior Staff since TAFL's inception, and she will be sorely missed, both by the staff and especially by myself.

At the moment, with Shell's semi-recent promotion, we will not be replacing Jackie's position, but will be redistributing her duties amongst the rest of the Senior Staff.

Please join me, and the Senior Staff, in wishing Jackie the best in her new job. :/

News and Announcements / Characters Category SPLIT!
« on: October 28, 2006, 04:28:00 PM »
This month we split the Characters category in half, 0-M and N-Z (similar to Songs, etc. @ TFL). Since the category is large and getting close to 3,000 subjects (yay!) we feel the time to do it is now before it gets any larger. Each half will be managed by a regular set of staffers, one for Applications, one for F/U/C and one for Troubles, and these positions have been filled by our current Characters staff. All Characters email addresses will be forwarded on to the new categories, so there will be no forms lost during this change.

Enjoy the shiny new forums and categories!

News and Announcements / Board Notifications FLUSHED
« on: October 20, 2006, 06:40:02 PM »
Due to an abundance of mail errors from board notifications bouncing, the notifications table has been emptied. I apologize for any inconvenience, hopefully this won't happen again for a while.

News and Announcements / Volunteers Form ONLINE!
« on: October 07, 2006, 11:09:31 PM »
As previously announced, the staff volunteer forms were inundated with spam entries. Fortunately I think I've found a workaround. You can find instructions on accessing the new form here, and we are now accepting staff applications once more! :)

News and Announcements / New Senior Staffer!
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:01:01 PM »
Shell has been promoted (overdue, I'm sure) to the Senior Staff, and we hope you'll welcome her as heartily as you have past promotees! <3

(We will be announcing a reorganization of Senior Staff duties in coming weeks.)

News and Announcements / Volunteers Form OFFLINE
« on: September 01, 2006, 03:27:50 PM »
Due to extreme spam abuse, I've disabled the volunteers form until further notice (basically, until we can make it check for certain things that will weed out the spam submissions. :);;;; )

News and Announcements / Today's Server Outage
« on: July 18, 2006, 01:13:34 AM »
I just wanted to apologize for today's downtime; wasn't just us, I'm sure anyone hosted on Dreamhost has similar gripes. They seem to have sorted out their (multi-layered!) technical difficulties, so we're back on the air. :D
