Fullmetal Alchemist and M*A*S*H?

i recently finished watching M*A*S*H and found an eerie similarity to FMA character wise. Especially between the characters Radar and Fuery, right down to appearance and need to help animals. Even the glasses and tech specialty! I also see similarities between Roy and Hawkeye (not Riza Hawkeye). There are others as well. Does anyone else see the similarities?

M*A*S*H was dubbed in Japanese (on the DVDs there's a Japanese track), so i wonder if Arakawa watched it?
