Title: Layout Marathon Guidelines
Post by: arashi on June 02, 2005, 02:30:57 PM
Seeing as how layout marathons are becoming much like an epidemic here at the TAFL boards, here are some guidelines if you want to run your own =)

1. Post a new topic for each marathon you're thinking of running, in the Layout Marathon (http://\"http://board.animefanlistings.org/index.php?showforum=72\") subforum.

2. Decide on a particular subject for the layouts for focus on. It could be anywhere from characters from 1 series, characters from series by one mangaka, bishounen/bishoujo characters, etc. Let your imagination run wild! But keep in mind that the broader your subject is, the more people might join the marathon =) Just a suggestion: try not to pick a subject that has been done recently. Otherwise, you might not get as many participants.

3. Check out whether there are other marathons currently running. When deciding when to run your marathon, make it so that it doesn't coincide with other marathons. Also, choose a comfortable time period to run the marathon. The usual is one month. If you are thinking of running a marathon concurrent with another one, try asking the owner of the other marathon. Also, mention that skinning is allowed in your rules so that participants can be in both marathons.

4. When posting about your marathon, have the few key facts in the first post:
Subject: the focus of the marathon, as described in guideline #2.
Date start: when all the layouts must be up by
Date end: the earliest date that all the layouts must stay up by, usually one month.
How to join: either have a separate join form or have people post in the thread
Who can join: domains, blogs, etc.
Any specific rules: basically your own rules, such as "one layout per characters/series".

5. Have some kind of linking system. If your marathon goes over 20 members, a button rotation is suggested since 20 buttons on a page might get tedious. But it's really up to the owner. If you're just using linking buttons, specify in your first post whether the buttons must be made by the participants or the owner of the marathon. Also, it's a good idea to jot down everyone's email so you can contact them easily.

6. You should update the first post with the participants list.

7. It might be nice if you have a FAQs page if your marathon starts getting large or if people start asking the same questions.

Again, these are just guidelines. Good luck and have fun marathoning!

Uh, as much as that is a great idea, I'm not like a maintainer of layout marathons or anything... I just volunteered to write the guidelines for it as it was suggested. I'll do it for this time but just as a little disclaimer (as I am a lazy person  ), layout marathons are posted in the "Off-Topic Chit-Chat" forum because it's something that is run individually by people who wish to. Thus, I hope that I'm not getting myself into the job of having to keep track of marathons that are going on, etc.

Post by: Daphne on June 03, 2005, 10:10:29 AM
IMHO, I think it's perfectly healthy for more than one marathon to go on at a time. It's not that I feel like someone's competing with me if I run a marathon and at the same time someone else does, I just think that this gives more people options to enter marathons, since some of them are quite narrow, and not everyone is a fan of/watches a particular series.

Ok.. cant believe Im doing this.. but Id like to run a marathon too.

Subject: One True Pairing
Date start: November 20
Date end: December 20

I will post about the marathon and the rules in September, so people can sign up then, because I think that signing up for something in June that happens in 3 months is kinda silly. xP

I don't think it would really be a bad thing if more than one marathon was going on at once. For example, a collective marathon and a blog marathon being at the same time. ^^; Just a thought.

This is really interesting, but do you think you could make it happen a lot earlier? I'd love to participate with a J-Rock layout but I'm not even sure where I'll be in January of next year.  :/  I don't think it's a problem to overlap with other marathons at all, because no one is participating in every single one of them (and with fandom specific marathons you always cut out a lot of people - like, July and August have a dozen overlapping marathons, which is why people started pushing off the next marathons, but I, in example, can only participate in one of the current ones because I don't even know the other fandoms). Plus, there is always site skinning, or alternative sites if you leave the marathon not domain-specific (I could participate with domain, blog, collective, etc, in different marathons at the same time).

So yes, very interesting, but could it please still happen sometime this year?  ;)

xP. also, just as an interesting thought, skinning a site is REALLY easy to do. i can help with the coding for people who want to do two marathons at once. also, a suggestion for the marathon guidelines- i think that having different skins for marathon should be ok'd for almost all marathons. just my thougts.  ;)
Title: Layout Marathon Guidelines
Post by: Soi Fong on June 14, 2005, 04:33:15 AM
I agree. We should be able to host more than one marathon at once. Or at least, for blogs, anyway. We should have blog-only marathons that run for a bit or something.

Because I must be the only person who changes blog layouts every week when I'm inspired. I could probably do it everyday, too o___o;;.

And yes, skinning isn't as hard as all those coding looks XD

I made an early post about how I feel that two marathons can run at the same time. We're doing it now at TFL. I've emailed the starter of the other marathon, just to see that she was okay with it, and went ahead and ran one with a completely different topic. It just gives more variety, because not everyone likes the same fandoms ;)

I'm really excited about all the marathons starting here, I must say! :/

Hey arashi, can you list my Slam Dunk layout marathon (http://\"http://board.animefanlistings.org/index.php?showtopic=6789\") in the first post? It starts on October 20th, 2005 and ends on November 20th, 2005.
Thanks so much!  ;)

Hi again! Umm...I'm going to start a Love Hina Marathon and it's going to start at September 4th 2006 - October 4th 2006. I'm just making the stuff for the marathon :birthday:  So can't wait for people to apply for it!

Yukino: Added!
Jaime: It's not really up to me to decide...
Light: Added!
Meroko: Changed! But, just FYI, there is another marathon running during August 2006.
Seiyuuki: Changed! Next time, include the url :birthday:
Meroko: Let me know the link when you have the post up.

Just general FYI, everyone:

1. Marathons are not a TAFL thing nor is this thread an "official layout marathon" thread. Whichever marathon you want to start, that's your decision.

2. Corollaryly, I don't have any control over marathons, either their subject or the dates during which they run. It's not up to me to decide when people start theres or how early in advance.

3. If you want your marathon included in the first post, include the subject of your marathon, the dates it is running (include the year!), AND the url to the post. I won't add you unless you have the url!

4. If you're changing information (such as the dates), again, post with the subject, date, and url.

Meroko: There isn't a limit on how many marathons you can make. But I think what Shadow is trying to say is that there are already many marathons... some running into late next year and you currently are running 2 marathons already. It might be too many too keep track of by yourself. Why don't you make one or two successful marathons and then think about a new one? Just a suggestion  I've seen some marathons fall apart because of too many members or lack of time by the owner. Anyway, it's really up to you ^__^ I'm not going to stop you if you do make another marathon but do keep in mind the balanace between the number of marathons that are running already and your own time. After all, there is no guarantee that someone will still be interested in a particular marathon in a year's time :)

PS: Also... You suggested an all-anime marathon right? Personally, I think that topic is really broad for a marathon. Just my two cents though :spork:

let see o.o I'm not that good explaining but I'll try my best X3.

A layout marathon is well, a marathon ^^;; or a layout event in which :
someone, the layout manager/leader, choose a topic, for example : a marathon about Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, and then post here at the layout marathon thread and/or build a page on which someone interested can provide his/her information (usualy: name, email, layout subject and url where is gonna be displayed). So in you case let say you want to make a Sakura layout, then you post on the thread or either contact the marathon leader and "join/get listed".
Then the url you've submitted when joinning must have up the layout of TRC: Sakura for the time the marathon will last (usually 4 weeks). The point of a marathon is (I think XD) having fun, create/make layouts and exchange links with other people who eventualy may become your friends because you like a subject they like so that's a good starting point, isn't it?  :/ .

Anyway, the link stuff works as a blog crew, you display all participants links so people visiting your site can take a look around and visit the others too. You'll often been required to just add a small code either be an iframe will buttons in a marquee or the popular button exchange code. Either way, it's all after the marathon leader so you'll just have to make your layout, a button and have it up on time that's it

*hope that helps ^^;;*

Oh so like its basically someone gives a topic of a anime/manga, and people make website layouts for it for that limited time and when another one rolls around, you make another? o-o; thats what i'm getting... but what happens for those people who want validated xhtml stuff and the iframe rotation codes aren't complying? what then o_o;;; xD
