Title: Love at first sight manga/anime ~
Post by: Mitzrael on September 21, 2009, 08:34:23 PM
I bring a new topic 8D! the idea this time? discussing, and possibly reviewing, manga titles you've recently started reading and liked at once!

The world of manga is so wide as the oceans separating most of our home countries from Japan xD; but be it fresh new or never-read-before-old manga there's always something 'new' to try and read so bring it on!
--

The title that has just called my attention not two days ago is Gankutsuou : The count of Monte Cristo by Maeda Mahiro! I'm sure the tv version by Gonzo is well known by some of you but I really never thought I would finally come across the black and white paper version and have the pleasure to read it in English (God bless scanlations on this one really T_T) Sadly I have not much time to follow it avidly and eat all 9 chapters that have been released at once but I'll definitely keep an eye on it and hopefully follow it for a long time  :birthday:

So, have you started reading/watching something recently as well?

ETA: Please do not confuse this thread with the 'What are you reading (http://\"http://board.animefanlistings.org/index.php?showtopic=17303\")', the goal here is to actually discuss recently started stuff you're onto  :D

I'm like, being a total sucker for josei angst lately. I started Cappuccino the other week and am eagerly devouring it; I honestly cannot explain why, LOL. And today I picked up Cousin, which is weird but good, because I like a slightly-chubby protagonist to relate to, whut.

...Yeah, I don't know why I'm on a josei trip, but I'm enjoying those two a lot.

I started reading Mirai Nikki some days ago (and I don't even remember how I ended up with that title, but well D8), and omg, it's an amazing series *__* very complex and psychological (is that the word?), totally not what it seems x:

... the fact that I feel kind of identified with Yuno isn't a good thing >x>

oh dear I'm just wishing I could work faster and get less distracted to finish reading chapter 4 of Gankutsuou and get more Count sexy-evilness ruling the world XD!

@Yamila the title doesn't ring a bell in my head ): what is it about?

The story is strange XD it's about a student whose parents are always absent, has no friends, etc. He has an obsession with keeping a diary of his life in his celphone (like Twitter but only for himself XDDD). His life is going to school, then going home and living in an imaginary world he created (quite deppressing, really). He has an imaginary friend, the god of Time & Space, Deux ex Machina. He believes it's a product of his imagination, but one day he reveals himself to be a real god, and that the boy (btw, his name is Yukiteru) and puts him in a game. Now his diary predicts his future and he has to kill other people who own them. The heroine, Yuno, joins him but she's quite the psycho xDDD

That's the story in general lines. It's quite terrifying and impressive (every character has some mental issue >>), but so far I like it a lot :3 *needs to read more lol* there are side stories I think, but I haven't touched them yet xDDD ah, and it's only a manga for now, and on-going.

I totally fell in love with Strobe Edge - it's an amazing shoujo series because it doesn't follow quite the same cliche. The guy the heroine falls for already has a girlfriend, and so the relationship between the two is being built on *gasp!~* FRIENDSHIP! Of course there are all your stereotypical shoujo elements, but I just love the refreshing take on guy + girl relationships - so much more realistic!

Also OMG, Kami no Shizuku. This series is apparently quite popular in Japan and I have up to volume 18 and just, guh. It's a fricken amazing series about wine and if I try to describe it, you will think it sounds hella boring but... omg. It's so good. There are only 18 chapters translated, though, but still so worth it.

There will be more. Right off the top of my head those two have really stunned me lately.

Well for me love at first sight lately was defenetly Kuroshitsuji - aside for the fact that I love how it's drawn (and as always I prefere the manga series over the anime), but it's nice ambientation too with victorian age, and for a moment in the begining it pulled me back to the time when i was obssessing over God Child and waiting new volumes to come out - the same as I'm doing for Kuroshitsuji, and besides they sometimes come to look a like because of the era both are put in and how they dress and naturaly the buttler-master relationship u.u

Please, Jeeves has absolutely stolen my heart thanks to the recent release of some anonymous scanlations. The series is a manga adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's short stories featuring Bertie and Jeeves and I'm loving it. Like  a lot of people, I've been a fan of Wodehouse's work since my youth and the combination of British humour + gorgeous manga art = AWESOME. I cannot recommend this one enough, it makes me squee like a fourteen year-old all over again.

I wouldn't exactly call it love at first sight, but by the end of the series I was totally enamored with Le Chevalier D'Eon. Although I had my doubts (history + horror is not exactly my genre combination of choice), the story was really amazing. It was so exciting by the end, I could barely take my eyes off of it. I didn't have a favourite character but rather I enjoyed all of the characters and how they interacted with each other. So good!

As for me, love at first sight was Deadman Wonderland and MPD Psycho...  Both now are of my favourite manga!

It takes a lot for me to really get ~*addicted*~ to anything and, in any case, it never gets close to the ridiculous level of obsession I've had for FMA for the last 6 years or so, but YEAH I LIKE SOME STUFF.

More recently, Cross Game (http://\"http://www.mixed-metaphor.org/fan/cg\"), which is made of ALL THAT IS GOOD AND AWESOME ❤ The manga is better (because it's got no fillers lol and yeah, it's the original work), but the anime is very very good. Both are on-going at the moment. This series has also made me resume my exploration of Adachi Mitsuru's series and, seriously, this guy is a freakin' genius.  I already adored Touch, but I recently fell in love with Rough. Pity there's no anime for that one, woe.

And around the beginning of the year I fell in love with Kimi ni Todoke and Special A =) SA's anime was pretty crappy, here's hoping the KimiTodo one will be better. That's pretty much it, nothing that really gets me crazy lately.

LOL, I've had Strobe Edge in my HD for a while now~ I'll get to it at some point xD;

Anime shows until Reo Arc/the festival and the last few episodes are a bunch of fillers. One thing I didn’t like about the anime is the inconsistency of the animation.

Beth, you should really put Soul Eater in your top list haha. It is the awesome!!!

I’m actually easily attracted to a series (give me a good art and I’ll start reading it in no time) but the art can be deceiving so most of the time I dropped it (or I’ll just put in hiatus in hope that it’ll get interesting again).

But right now…Beelzebub because I love shonen and it’s funny. This series crack me good. It’s fairly new but it has potential that if WSJ take care of it and the mangaka don’t get wacko in the middle of the series. But so far so good.
Also, Pandora Hearts because Oz is there and I’m a pedo lol. No, seriously it has an interesting plot and I like the characters a lot <3. And Akaboshi - Ibun Suikoden as well (which big bro recommended it to me).

I was in dire need on reading something new in the shoujo world. I'd been reading so much shonen manga that I needed to indulge my inner romantic before she started freaking out. That was when Sumie recommended me to read Sukitte Ii na yo. Barely a few pages in and I was already interested. the characters were adorable, the romance was (and is, obviously) well developed and easy passed. I always prefer when romantic manga feel more realistic. Makes it feel like it could happen to me, ya know?

However, other then Sumie, I haven't heard of anybody else who even knows this manga exists :) Which makes me sad because I find it so breath takingly cute!

I really like Sukitte Ii na yo, it's a lovely series =)

I'm currently a little bit fixated with nisiOisin's works ♥ I loved SHAFT's adaptation of Bakemonogatari, so I started watching Katanagatari and it's really my favorite anime that's airing at the moment. I'm also reading the first book in the Zaregoto series, which I'm loving. I hope they release more of his light novels eventually (especially Bakemonogatari). It's also been announced that SHAFT will adapt Kizumonogatari too, so I'm ecstatic about that~

Besides that, I'm just reading the usual. Oresama Teacher is a nice (shoujo) manga I discovered rather recently, though.

To my surprise, it was AMAZING. o________o I haven't totally finished it yet, but I'm almost done and I've become a HUGE fangirl. I've just finished reading all the available chapters of Oniwaka to Ushiwaka - Edge of the World (6 so far - LOL it's on hiatus :x ). I had wanted to read this series since I first heard about it since well, it's by the same creators of Get Backers *O* Loving it so far, it has good action, an interesting story aaaaaand fanservice (for all audiences~). Why yes, one of the reasons I'm digging it is because the two main characters remind me of Ban and Ginji >_> actually in some parts I couldn't help laughing at the "OMG HERE WE GO AGAIN" feeling I get from them ;) Can't wait for the releases to be resumed >:

That would be Full moon wo sagashite <: It was long time ago ... back then I didn't use torrents. I found one minute long preview for the first episode. I was really impressed and later I watched all 52 (there are 52 episodes) previews(and all of them were one minute long xD). And one year later (maybe two?three?) I found this anime again and finally watched it. But I love manga much more. Izumi is such a bitch in anime -.- in manga he's cute <3 and even the endings are different and almost the whole story -.-
