Title: Dead FLs
Post by: Marilyn on June 13, 2007, 03:05:28 AM
This might be a stupid question...but what do you do when a fanlisting disappears? In that, the web domain no longer exists and the link has been removed from TFL/TAFL?

I recently ran my fanlisting collective through a link checker and a few of them are no longer around (I checked to see if the link had moved on TAFL and there was no listing). Do you still leave the buttons up and delete the link - or do you take the buttons down as well?

It's sad because there was no email from the owner saying that they were taking the site down, just poof - it's gone.  X_X I am still sort of new to fanlistings (well it has been over a year, but that's not much) so I was wondering what some of you more experienced people have done when this has happened to you. Thanks in advance for your imput!

Unless the link leads to somewhere... inappropriate after the fanlisting disappears, I've always just left my buttons intact in my collective. After all, I am still a fan of the subject regardless of whether or not a fanlisting exists! X_X

But really, it is just up to you if you want to remove the link or not. There isn't a rule of thumb or anything.

I generally delete them when I learn that the site has died, because someone might build a new listing that I'd therefore want to join.  Plus I hate dead links.

But it's really up to you and what you want to do with it.  X_X

Like Genevieve, I hate linking to dead sites..  So I delete them ( especially if they're removed from TFL or here -- Otherwise I try to update the link )!

I try to do a clean up once every couple of months so that it doesn't get too messy. :0

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I will definately delete the dead links as soon as I can. That's a good idea. I might keep some of my buttons, though, and periodically check to see if someone else has created a new FL for the subject.

Since there's already a topic about the dead fanlisting, I'm going to post my question here.. Several times in the past I came across fanlistings that are completely dead, and I submitted a report, but I neither receveid an answer nor the fanlistings have been put in "trouble" after that. And I'm not talking about reports that I made two days ago or so, but reports that I've made 2-3 months ago,  but in the troubles updates that followed, those fanlistings weren't mentioned and are still not working. I made again the reports, but still the fanlistings hasn't been "troubled" at all.

This makes me a little disappointed, because among them there are fanlistings that I'd like to own and run, and it feels like they are being hold in "hostage" by people who doesn't care anymore, it's sad! ._.

There are several reasons a fanlisting that is reported would not be placed in troubles. Most notably, if the fanlisting owner is experiencing problems and already sent in a downtown form and informed the troubles staffer- they've probably worked something out. A grace period or what have you. We always check all reports before actually placing a fanlisting on troubles; if we check and we find no problem, then we do not trouble the fanlisting.

It's always best to be as specific in your report as possible. If you are concerned about a certain fanlisting that you have reported, you can always contact the staffer in charge of troubles too. Staffers care just as much about the maintaining of FLs as everyone else, and remember: not everyone who is experiencing problems with their fanlisting does so purposely. Hope that helps!

Yes, it helped, thank you very much for your reply, I'll follow your suggestion! Maybe I was too harsh about the "hostage" thing, but when months passes and the situation still remains the same, it's disappointing.. Thank you again!
